God’s Enemies-part two

God’s Enemies

How long has it been that you have considered the fact that God has enemies? It is a fact that there are many people who are not friends of God. The sacred writings clearly teach that our heavenly Father has enemies.

Religious cowards are enemies of God. God wants his people to be courageous. There was a time when the people of God contended in behalf of truth. They spoke against all religious error because they loved the truth, the congregation of the Lord, and they loved the souls of people. A person cannot be a religious coward and be pleasing to God. Religious cowards are God’s enemies because they do not speak against things that God says are ungodly. God says “the cowardly” will have their part in the lake of fire. (Rev. 21:8) We cannot be passive but we must actively contend for the faith. (Jude 3) We can’t sit by and watch the fight. God says we are to fight the good fight of the faith. (1 Tim. 6: 12) Let us raise our voices and tell the sin-sick world what God says aboutsame sex marriage, abortion, homosexuality, idolatry, and anything else that is out of harmony with the word of God.

Divisive people are enemies of God. Division may be unavoidable if truth is at stake. The New Testament does not teach us to have unity at any price. Jesus said true unity comes from keeping the words of the apostles. (John 17:20-21) There is no middle ground between truth and error. In the context of this study, divisive people are those who create unnecessary division by teaching error, pressing matters of opinion, making and binding laws that God has not made, etc. Paul wrote, “As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.” (Titus 3: 10-11) In verse seven, he said that we are to avoid “foolish controversies.”

God’s Enemies

How long has it been that you have considered the fact that God has enemies? It is a fact that there are many people who are not friends of God. The sacred writings clearly teach that our heavenly Father has enemies.

Atheists are enemies of God. They deny that God even exists. Yet, they continue breathing God’s air, eating his food, drinking his water, and are sustained on God’s earth. God does exist and his providence gives life and sustenance to all. One cannot deny the fact of God’s existence and be God’s friend. “And without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing to him; for the one who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder to those who seek him.” (Hebrews. 11:6) Paul argues that a person can know that God exists. (Romans 1:19-21; Acts 17:22-29)

Worldly people are enemies of God. “You adultresses, do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore would be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4). The word “adultresses” in the text refers to those who commit spiritual adultery, that is, they leave God and are committed to worldliness. They, like Demas love this present world. (2 Timothy 4:9) They do not hesitate to attend secular affairs when they could be with their brothers and sisters. (Hebrews 10:25). They do not hesitate to be with their worldly friends when they could be with fellow-believers encouraging and receiving strength. (Acts 2:42; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14).

False teachers are enemies of God. This is something that many people, even some who are in Christ, seem not to understand. False teachers destroy souls. They lead people astray. Their doctrines are destructive and they make merchandise of people. They pervert the way of truth. (2 Peter 2:1-3) Consider this: no apostle ever befriended false teachers as if they are harmless! The apostles spent much of their lives opposing multiple erroneous doctrines, and strengthening brothers and sisters in the truth. (Acts 13:6-12; Philippians 3:18-19) Denominational preachers teach doctrines that lead people to perdition and they are fighting a losing battle against God. Preachers among God’s people who teach error or who will not oppose those who teach false doctrine are God’s enemies (Jude 3; I Timothy 6:12).
