Some Facts About The Lord’s Church
(No.3)

We are continuing this extremely important series of articles for the benefit of the Lord’s people and those who are members of the denominations.

(6) The Lord’s congregation is not a denomination. How many times has someone asked you, “What denomination are you a member of?”     Did you respond by saying “the church of Christ?” If so, you answered incorrectly. The church of Christ is not only not a denomination; it is anti-denominational. It opposes denominationalism because denominationalism is sinful and has no right to exist!

One of the definitions of denomination is, “an organized group of religious congregations.” (The American Heritage Dictionary, page 381) A denomination is smaller than the universal body of believers and larger than the local congregation. No such organization exists in the New Testament. The “church” in the New Testament consists of all the saved! Denominations were built by human beings. They are sustained by human laws. They are named after men and/or movements. Denominationalism is the result of division and dissatisfaction with God’s will. God’s word condemns religious division that results from people turning away from the teaching of the New Testament. (John 17:11, 20, 21; Romans 16:17-18)

(7) Members of the Lord’s congregation are called Christians in relation to their Lord. The “disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (Acts 11:26) A Christian is a follower of Christ. He is the one we must follow. (1 Corinthians 11:1) He has all authority. (Matthew 28:18) He is the head of the assembly. (Ephesians 1:22-23) He is the lawgiver.(John 12:48-50) The names Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah’s Witness, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, and Mormon are never used in the New Testament to describe the people of God. They are humanly authorized names and no one has the right to wear them in religion. Why would a person want to be identified by names that are not authorized by the word of God?

The Lord’s congregation is the only one that is right in the eyes of the God of heaven! Man-made religious societies are without divine sanction. They are not found on the pages of God’s word. There was a time when denominational preachers at least tried to justify their doctrines and practices. But that has largely changed. Yet, the Lord’s faithful people must move ahead.

Some Facts About The Lord’s Church (No.2)

We began this series of studies in last weeks bulletin. It is a very important study because of a lack of knowledge among the Lord’s people and those who are members of the denominations.

(3) The Lord’s congregation is comprised of people who have been immersed in order to have forgiveness of their sins. There are no non-immersed people who are members of the body of Christ. The New Testament is clear about this. Paul wrote, “For, in one Spirit we were all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13) Paul also wrote to the brothers and sisters in Galatia, “For as many of you as were immersed into Christ have, put on Christ. (Galatians 3 :27) If a person has not been immersed in order to have the forgiveness of sins, and in order to get into Christ, he is not a member of the Lord’s congregation!

(4) The Lord’s congregation is composed of people who obeyed the gospel, without regard to race, national origin, economic or social status. God shows no partiality! (Acts 10:34-35; Romans 2:11) This is a lesson that all mankind should learn. Paul wrote, “There can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for you all are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) Black, white, rich, poor, slave, free, male or female all enjoy the same privileges of forgiveness and all other spiritual blessings in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3) God’s congregation is the true “rainbow coalition,” and a beautiful one at that!

(5) The Lord’s congregation has no man-made creed or any other human document that constitutes a guide in all religious matters. The word of the living God is its only rule of faith and practice. We have been given everything that pertains to life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3) The New Testament tells us everything that we need to know to live a godly life on earth in preparation for heaven. There is no authorized place in religion for the Baptist manual, the Methodist discipline, the Catholic catechism, and all other human creeds! God’s word is the all-sufficient guide in every way. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Peter 4:11)

Some Facts About The Lord’s Church

The word “ church” is the translation found in most English bibles for the Greek word ekklesia. Ekklesia does not mean “called out” in the New Testament as is often alleged. It means assembly, congregation, or group. In religious contexts it refers to the people, who have been saved from sin by grace through faith and the application of the precious blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:5, 8-9; 1 Peter 1:17-19). Now let us notice some facts about the congregation of Christ.

(1) Its existence was planned by God. Daniel speaks of the days when the kingdom of God would be established. He said, “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed … ” (Daniel 2:44) We learn from the New Testament that the kingdom about which Daniel wrote was the congregation that Jesus promised to build. (Matthew 16: 18-19) God established it through the work of Christ. Please notice that God and Christ are the ones who built the wonderful body of Christ. Neither John the Immerser, John Wesley, Ellen G. White, Charles T. Russell, or any other mere human being built the Lord’s congregation. It has the touch of the divine hand of deity! No other religious institution on earth can rightly make such a claim. God had nothing to do with building any denomination on earth.

(2) The Lord’s congregation was purchased with his own blood. The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin. (Hebrews 9:12-13; 10:4) The precious blood of God’s own Son was poured out on the cross of Calvary for the sins of the world. (Matthew 26:28; John 1:29; 1 John 2: 1-2) The Lord Jesus did not die in order to build or purchase denominations. He did not shed his blood in order for people to join denominations. The Lord is not the founder, deliverer, or preserver of any denomination on the face of the earth! The fact that the Lord shed his blood for his congregation and no other should encourage us to have holy hatred for the sin of denominationalism! There is no ground on which to compromise. Jesus’ blood was pure and he died to enable people to be purified from sin. He did not die to establish man-made, sectarian, and divisive systems of religion. His blood was shed for the one body of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13-15) (More to follow)

Announcement: God willing, I intend to begin teaching a class on The Fundamentals of New Testament Greek in a few weeks. This class has been requested by some of our young men. It will not be an “academic” approach, but the focus will be on how to accurately use Greek in study, sermon preparation, responding to false doctrine, and the proper use of basic research books and other material.
