“The Pillar and Foundation of the Truth”
Paul wrote the following words to a young evangelist named Timothy: “If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the congregation of the living God, pillar and foundation of the truth.” (1 Timothy
God has a “household,” a family, and it is on the earth for a very important reason; it is the “pillar and foundation of the truth.” We must never forget why we as the Lord’s people are on the earth.
We are to uphold and defend religious truth.
This involves teaching and preaching God’s will. Anything that challenges God’s word challenges God, because he is the author of his word. Jesus said God’s word is truth. (John 17:17) Christians must seriously take note of anything that perverts the doctrine of Christ. We must avoid complacency. Soldiers of Christ arise! (Ephesians 6: 10-20)
God’s plan of salvation is always challenged by denominational doctrines that promote salvation by faith alone, grace alone, and even works alone. Nothing alone saves. People must believe (John 3:16), change their ways (Acts 2:38), and be immersed in order to be saved from their past sins (Acts 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21). The household of God must be alert to changes that are made to God’s plan of salvation.
God’s plan of worship is always challenged by denominational doctrines that promote human additions to worship. Mechanical music in worship, praise dancing, be-bopping, and imitating the sounds of mechanical instruments are human additions that add to God’s plan. The New Testament teaches us to sing (Ephesians 5:19), pray (Acts 2:42), contribute a portion of our monetary resources (l Corinthians 16:1-2), eat the Lord’s Supper (l Corinthians 11:23-29), and instruct the Lord’s people in the way of righteousness. (Acts 2:42)
Any threat to God’s holy truth must be addressed by God’s congregation because it is the “pillar and foundation of the truth.”
